I am a specialist knee surgeon with particular expertise in sports injuries and knee replacement surgery. I have extensive experience in performing ACL reconstruction, arthroscopic surgery and knee replacements.
A particular interest for joint replacement surgery is partial knee replacement. I am one of only 5% of UK knee surgeons who performs more than 50 of this type of procedure per year. You can read my surgeon profile on the National Joint Registry.
My practice is based in Harrogate (where I am currently the clinical lead for orthopaedics) and Leeds.
My approach is directed at identifying the underlying cause to any knee pathology. This enables a treatment plan to address all aspects of knee function in order to optimise the results of treatment. The support of specialist physiotherapists, plus swift and high quality investigations help to achieve this goal.
At the heart of my practice is a commitment to patient communication and care. Providing a clear and concise explanation of the diagnosis – something that should be taken for granted – plus all the treatment options available and their goals is a fundamental part of patient satisfaction. Having close links with high calibre specialist health professionals (radiologists and physiotherapists) is essential for this bespoke and holistic approach.
I studied Medicine at Newcastle University. After graduation I spent a number of years working in Australia. Part of this period was in the outback of Queensland and worked in the Emergency Department of the mining town of Mount Isa. From here I ventured to the isolated Aboriginal reserves of Mornington Island (off the north coast of Australia) and Doomage as the lone medical practitioner – a true life-changing experience.
Following further intensive care training in Brisbane I returned to the UK to pursue my passion for orthopaedic surgery and undertook specialist training in Yorkshire.
My expertise in knee surgery was gained from renowned UK and Australian fellowship posts. I worked as a consultant at Wrightington Hospital Orthopaedic Centre of Excellence, before moving to Harrogate in 2011. I maintain an active interest in education and am a clinical supervisor for junior doctors. I am a regular faculty member teaching on national and international courses for training orthopaedic surgeons, ligament reconstruction and partial knee replacement surgery.
